Varicose veins generally appear as twisting, bulging, rope-like cords that are raised above the surface of the skin. These veins can be flesh-colored, blue or dark purple in color. Varicose veins are usually found on the back of the calves or on the inside portion of the legs because standing and walking increases pressure in veins present in the lower body.

Varicose veins are very common, affecting an estimated 40% of women and 25% of men. For many of these people, varicose veins and spider veins (where blood pools in smaller, finer veins) are only a matter of cosmetic concern. For others, varicose veins can cause aching, throbbing pain and a higher risk for more serious circulatory disorders.

How Varicose Veins Form

Arteries carry blood from the heart to the rest of the body's tissues. Veins return the blood back to the heart, allowing it to be recirculated. Small, one-way valves in the veins allow blood to flow toward the heart and then close to prevent blood from flowing backwards.

Varicose veins occur when these valves malfunction and are unable to close, allowing blood to flow backwards (known as "venous reflux"). This blood then collects in superficial leg veins, causing them to become enlarged and varicose.
